Magento and high-risk payment gateways

Are you a new high-risk Magento merchant whose website sells products like electronic cigarettes, premium cigars, or firearms via a secure background checked FFL to FFL transfer? If so, there are many solid payment gateway and merchant account options available to help you process payments securely.

Instead of struggling with credit card processors who will eventually reject you, we can help you set up properly from the get-go with an Authorize.Net, NMI or ePN account, with our expert guidance readily at hand.

With high-risk credit card processing applied correctly on the back end, you won’t have to worry about accepting payments on your Magento store. In addition, because you use Magento you will be signing up for a powerful and affordable web-solution.

What is Magento?

Magento Open Source is a very popular and freely available open source online shopping cart, previously called Magento Community. Magento offers flexibility and control over how your e-Commerce store looks and functions online.

This software is well known for being a reliable platform that safely processes credit card payments, as well as being scalable and flexible as it works with multiple payment gateways.

Depending on the size of your business there are three Magento solutions that you can choose from, all with plenty of great features. These solutions put you in the driver’s seat when designing your e-commerce store.

Having an online store that works efficiently and easily is a great first step in building your online business. However, if you use the wrong processors and payment gateways you might not be able to accept payments, even though your site is otherwise up and running. So how are your customers going to be able to buy your products? That’s where we can help. We assist Magento site owners and help them correctly set up a high-risk friendly Authorize.Net, ePN, or NMI gateway so they can accept credit card payments online.

What exactly are Authorize.Net, ePN, and NMI?

Authorize.Net, ePN, and NMI are all payment gateways that send an e-commerce customer’s transaction to your merchant account or processor — quickly, efficiently and safely. All three can manage the routing of your e-commerce transactions similarly to how a credit card swipe machine you might find in a walk-in retail store manages and transmits cardholder data, but it does so online and with many more available features.

Authorize.Net, NMI & alternatives like ePN

Before January 2014, due to some prohibited category limitations, Authorize.Net was not always the best fit for a host of merchant types, such as FFL dealers or vape and e-juice merchants. Happily, this is no longer the case – as long as your Authorize.Net account is paired to an appropriate high-risk friendly merchant account. It is a fantastic solution for nearly all merchant types – so feel free to contact us anytime to learn more.

That said, even with these positive changes NMI or Network Merchants is still a common, reliable, and feature-rich alternative, and an excellent choice for many merchants. One of NMI’s greatest features is that it allows high-risk merchants to integrate more than one merchant account at a time. You can read more about NMI here.

ePN is also a popular gateway, especially for firearms dealers who sell online, as it pairs seamlessly with the top-rated gun auction sites. It’s very easy to use and allows for a great deal of customization so that your ordering pages can maintain the same style as your e-commerce site. For more information on ePN you can click here.

How does the process work?

On a basic level, gateways like Authorize.Net or NMI are complex software suites that work with Magento or other online shopping carts or software systems by sending and receiving data back and forth to your merchant account. Authorize.Net (or NMI) manage the complex routing of this data on behalf of the merchant (in this case you).

Let us take you through some necessary steps:

  • Your customer purchases something online through your shopping cart.
  • The gateway does all the legwork by first passing the secure transaction information via a secure connection to the processor.
  • The bank processor, where you have your merchant account, submits the transaction to the major credit card network.
  • That credit card network then routes the transaction to the customer’s bank.
  • The issuing bank approves or declines the transaction and sends the information back to the processor, who then sends it on to Authorize.net.
  • Net stores the transaction results and sends them to your website for the customer and merchant to see.
